Are You Ready for a Disaster?

Art Glasgow, Peck-Glasgow Insurance

During April 2011, residents of the state of Alabama and surrounding states learned the true meaning of the word disaster!  April 27 turned out to be a day to remember, as tornadoes ravaged our state.  Many were directly hit suffering loss of life and property.  Others had to go without electricity, water, gas and telephones for several days.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security recommends that everyone have an emergency plan in  place.  That includes a kit with essential survival items.    The basics of survival include fresh water, food, clean air and warmth.  Included in your basic emergency kit should be:

1. Water, one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation

2. Battery powered radios and a NOAA weather Radio with extra batteries.

3. Food, at least a three day supply of non-perishable food.

4. Flashlights

5. First aid kit and supplies

6. Whistle to signal for help

7. garbage bags, towels, and moist towelettes for personal sanitation

8. tools

9. can opener for food

10. Cell phone with chargers

Additional items to consider adding or at least have accessible are:

1. Prescription drugs

2. diapers and formula if you have children

3. family documents, including your homeowners and auto insurance policies

4. Cash

5. sleeping bags and blankets

6. a change of clothing

7. bleach

8. personal hygiene items

9. paper and pencil

10.  Books, games, etc …for entertainment and activity

A good conversation with your Peck-Glasgow Insurance agent concerning your Alabama Homeowners Insurance policy and your Alabama Auto Insurance policy ahead of time is a good time to make sure that your property is insured to protect you from a catastrophic loss.  Alabama Life Insurance is also needed to help your family with living expenses in the event of an untimely death.
