How Alabama Home Insurance Protects Your Valuables

Whether you own your home or are in a rental property, having an Alabama home insurance policy can cover losses from burglaries. Renters’ insurance is usually cheaper than homeowners’ insurance – because you only need to cover your possessions as a renter. However while insurance can financially cover the loss of possessions (up to whatever limit you set on your policy), everyone has some items that are priceless in terms of their sentimental value.

Protecting your valuable possessions is particularly important when you go on vacation. Your home could be vulnerable to a burglary, particularly if it is on the radar of a professional thief.

The most effective way to keep your valuables secure is to leave them in a safe deposit box. You can organize this with your bank. Otherwise, if you’ve decided to keep your valuables at home, locking them away in a safe is probably the best bet. Make sure the safe is put somewhere where it is difficult to find, like behind the paneling in a wall. However be aware that some thieves might be prepared to spend hours locating a safe if they know the occupant is away on vacation.

You also may want to engrave your possessions with some sort of identification mark, to increase the chances of them being retrieved if they are stolen. Registering your valuable possessions with your local police station is also a good idea.

Make sure you have a detailed inventory of your possessions. This can make your Alabama home insurance claim a lot easier should your home be burgled. Don’t forget too, that particularly valuable items might not be sufficiently covered by a standard policy – category and item limits are often small, so you may need to obtain endorsements or ‘riders’ for high value items.
